How can I fund my PhD?

You can fund your PhD in several ways:

  • Apply for a fully funded PhD project
  • Self-fund your PhD
  • Apply for external funding

What are the English Language requirements?

We accept a variety of English language qualifications. The standard IELTS requirements are:

  • 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.

Additionally, you can complete a pre-sessional English course if needed.

What is ATAS and how do I apply?

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) applies to international students and researchers (except for exempt nationalities) who intend to study or work in certain sensitive subjects at Masters or Doctoral level in the UK.

What information is required in the application?

The application requires the following information:

  • Personal Information: Name, date of birth, address
  • Education Details: Qualifications obtained and institutions attended
  • English Language Qualifications: IELTS, TOEFL, or medium of instruction from a UK institution
  • Programme Information: Preferred start date, project title, supervisor name
  • Funding Information: Self-funded, sponsored, or seeking a fully funded PhD
  • Referee Details
  • Employment and Experience

We also require you to upload the following documents to your application:

The first 4 documents should be uploaded and are required before your application can be reviewed by your preferred supervisor.

  • Degree transcripts/certificates
  • CV
  • Two references (or referee contact details for direct communication)
  • Motivation letter (including reasons for pursuing a PhD, why Strathclyde, and funding plans)
  • English language evidence
  • Financial support evidence
  • Research proposal (if requested)

 

When will I hear back about my application?

After submitting your application, you will receive a message within 1-2 working days if there are any outstanding documents. Responses from potential supervisors may take a couple of weeks.

 

What is the deadline for applying?

We have three intake dates per year: October, February, and June.

  • International Applicants:
    • For October entry, submit your application with all documents by May to allow time for visa processing.
    • For February entry, submit by October.
    • For June entry, submit by February.
  • Home Applicants: For all entry dates, applications should be submitted at least 2 months before the start date for processing.
