Remit of the EDI Committee – Department of Architecture
The Department of Architecture is committed to fostering a positive, inclusive, and respectful cultural environment where both staff and students can thrive. We believe that everyone should feel valued and supported in their academic and professional journey. Achieving this vision requires collective action from all members of the Department, at all levels.
The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, which held its first meeting on 23rd January 2025, plays a central role in driving this mission. We are dedicated to implementing best practices throughout the Department, demonstrating our commitment to EDI, and ensuring that our policies and practices reflect the diverse needs of our community. By identifying areas for improvement, setting clear targets, and developing actionable steps, we aim to make meaningful progress in creating an inclusive environment for all.
The EDI Committee serves as the representative body for the Department, advocating for the recognition and support of individuals' differing needs. We are involved in aspects of staff recruitment, development, and promotion, as well as the teaching and support of students. Our goal is to identify challenges, implement practical solutions, and regularly assess the effectiveness of our initiatives to ensure sustained progress.
We recognise that achieving true equality, diversity, and inclusion is an ongoing journey. By promoting awareness, fostering open dialogue, and supporting continued action, we aim to create a culture where everyone—whether staff or student—feels respected, empowered, and valued, regardless of their background or personal circumstances.
Ultimately, our aim is to cultivate a Department of Architecture where best practices in EDI are embedded in every aspect of our work, ensuring that all members of the Department can contribute, succeed, and feel a sense of belonging.
