Biomedical Science (BSc Hons)Leah Brown
Hello. My name is Leah, and I’m from Balloch, a small town that hugs the shores of Loch Lomond. In June 2024, I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science with First Class Honours. I am deeply passionate about contributing to one of the greatest challenges of our time: cancer research.
My determination to pursue a career in this field was solidified during the time I supported my mother through her cancer treatment. This personal experience ignited a profound interest in understanding the disease and developing novel cancer therapies, influencing my decision to study Biomedical Science to gain the foundational knowledge needed to achieve my goals.
My primary ambition for the future is to contribute significantly to the field of cancer research. I am driven to be part of the scientific community working towards developing novel therapies and improving existing treatments for cancer patients. My ultimate goal is to pursue a PhD, focusing on cancer immunology, and eventually work as a researcher in a leading institution.
Outside of university, I find joy in travelling and exploring new cultures, especially through city breaks. In my downtime, I take pleasure in reading, going on walks, and playing the bagpipes in my local pipe band. I also maintain my fitness by running and going to the gym. Additionally, I have held part-time employment with the NHS during my studies, contributing to the smooth running of the healthcare system and witnessing the critical role of science in diagnosing and treating various conditions.
Choosing the right course
My path to studying BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science was slightly unconventional, but Strathclyde made the process extremely smooth.
After applying for multiple courses at Strathclyde, I initially found it challenging to decide on the right career path for me. I enjoyed chemistry, biology, physics, and maths at school and wasn’t sure which course would be the best fit. I initially enrolled in MEng Chemical Engineering at Strathclyde in 2019, as it incorporated aspects of most of the subjects I enjoyed. However, after completing a year of study, I realised I wasn’t passionate about this course.
I became more interested in the pharmaceutical applications of my studies and felt I was missing a strong focus on biology. After discussing my concerns with my year coordinator, we decided it would be best for me to transfer to a degree aligned more closely with my interests and passions. Strathclyde was extremely understanding of my situation, and after expressing my interest in biomedical sciences, they offered me the opportunity to transfer degree programme. I am forever grateful to the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) staff for their support and for recognising my passion and determination for a degree in biomedical sciences. Without their consideration, the transition would have been much more stressful and time-consuming, but instead, they made it extremely smooth.
Skills to excel
Studying BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science at Strathclyde, I developed a wide range of specialist knowledge and professional skills essential for a career in the biomedical field. I gained an in-depth understanding of areas such as cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, haematology and pathology, which provided a robust theoretical foundation. I also became proficient in various laboratory techniques, including PCR, chromatography, immunofluorescence and cell culture, enhancing my practical skills.
During the summer between my third and fourth year, I was fortunate to be awarded the prestigious 2023 Wellcome Trust Biomedical Vacation Scholarship. This enabled me to complete an 8-week internship at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute. There, I acquired a wide range of advanced research skills, focusing on a project to investigate the role of neutrophils in breast cancer metastasis to the lungs. This project was particularly meaningful to me, as it provided the opportunity to apply my skills to real-world cancer research and equipped me with various research techniques for my future studies and career. I am deeply grateful for the chance to contribute to advancing breast cancer research.
The highlight of my course was my final year honours project. This honed my analytical abilities and critical thinking, while group projects improved my teamwork and communication skills. Additionally, I learned to manage my time effectively, balancing academic and extracurricular activities and developed a strong sense of ethical and professional conduct. The experience of learning a wide range of skills, becoming independent, and immersing myself in laboratory culture was incredibly fulfilling.
Why Strathclyde
Strathclyde’s strong reputation in Biomedical Science significantly influenced my decision to study here. The University is well-known for its cutting-edge research and comprehensive academic programmes, which I knew would provide a solid foundation for my career ambitions.
Coming from an underrepresented area where not many people pursue higher education, I enrolled in the FOCUS West programme during my senior year of high school. This programme offered insights into university life, with many sessions held at Strathclyde. From my first visit, I felt welcomed and comfortable on campus.
Additionally, the summer before my final year of high school, I attended the Accelerate Chemistry programme delivered by Strathclyde’s Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry. This week-long programme introduced me to university life, provided lab experience, and taught me data analysis, presentation skills, and lab report writing. Initially, the programme was overwhelming as it highlighted the differences between university and high school. However, the lecturers and laboratory staff were extremely welcoming, friendly, and supportive, significantly influencing my choice to study at Strathclyde.
Strathclyde’s state-of-the-art research facilities and partnerships with leading research institutes were a major influence. The laboratories are spacious, modern, and equipped with advanced technology. This aspect was particularly appealing as I knew it would provide ample opportunities for hands-on research experience. Additionally, the library facilities provided at Strathclyde offer a wide range of study options, whether it be silent study or group study, which I really enjoyed. The new Learning & Teaching building is extremely spacious, modern, and unique, offering a wide range of facilities for both learning and socialisation, which also appealed to me.
