Forensic Science (MSc)Anne Grima

My name is Anne Grima, and I have just finished my MSc in Forensic Science, where I graduated with distinction and at the top of my class. I have wanted to become a forensic scientist for quite a few years now, and I’m very proud of myself for getting a step closer. I love learning a lot, and I am thus grateful that I was given the opportunity to study at Strathclyde. I also enjoy keeping myself busy too, with hobbies that include reading, acting, knitting, and archery!

Why did you choose to study at Strathclyde?

The country I grew up in, Malta, unfortunately did not offer a Masters in forensic science. It had always been a plan to study forensic science and to possibly carry out my Masters abroad. When I was looking for Masters courses, I came across the MSc Forensic Science at Strathclyde, and instantly fell in love! The vast amount of theory coupled with the hands-on practical work, which included a mock crime scene and mock court case, were very appealing.

When I mentioned this course to my undergraduate lecturers and peers, it seemed like this course was indeed the course that Maltese aspiring forensic scientists took.

It also helped that this course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, and that it is (and was) ranked the best forensic science course in the UK (Complete University Guide 2025)!

What did you like about your course and Strathclyde?

Strathclyde in general is a very welcoming place that focuses on inclusion. The accessible facilities and gender neutral bathrooms were a lovely surprise, and definitely made me feel welcome. There are also a lot of helpful services, from wellbeing to tutoring to career guidance.

What really helped me feel the most welcome, however, were my lecturers and the technical staff of my course. Every person in the teaching and technical staff was very kind, helpful, and welcoming. They supported every student as best as they could, and respected each individual for the person that they are. They made sure we had the facilities needed, and strived to give us the best educational experience that they could. I am very grateful for each and every one of them.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?

The professional skills that I probably developed the most whilst studying the course was how to prioritise work, plan ahead, and work closely as a team. In addition, my laboratory skills developed much further thanks to the multiple laboratory sessions scheduled for us. I feel like the course truly helped me for the future and I cannot wait to put these skills into practice.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

My main ambition is to be a forensic biologist. I enjoy working in the lab a lot, and I feel like the course at Strathclyde really helped build the proper mindset to be able to do so. I especially love working with DNA, and the fact that I had the opportunity to work at the wildlife DNA forensic laboratory in Edinburgh for 3 months as part of my dissertation really helped me further develop my skills and put them into practice.

What's your favourite thing about Glasgow?

I am not a fan at how cliché this sounds, but I have to say the people. The phrase “people make Glasgow” is indeed true, and I feel like I have found lifelong friends there. My other big favourite thing is the amount of greenery all around. Walking to lectures through a park filled with trees that change throughout the seasons was a magical experience every day, and I do miss my daily walks.

What would you say to anyone considering coming to study at Strathclyde?

Enjoy the opportunity! Do not be afraid to ask questions and be curious. I also recommend trying out at least one of the ample clubs/societies present. I had always wanted to try out archery, so at Strathclyde I gave it a try and managed to win some medals as part of the competition team! Studies are important and must be given priority, but it is also important to socialise and enjoy yourself! Taking care of yourself and your mental health will also help you achieve more in your studies.
