Advanced Architectural DesignCarolina Rigoni

Carolina Rigoni followed in her brother’s footsteps, leaving Italy and coming to Strathclyde for her Masters studies.

After graduating from the MArch in Advanced Architectural Design course in 2022, she chose to continue her studies in the Department of Architecture, this time pursuing a PhD. Carolina shares her experiences of studying at Strathclyde and what her ambitions are for the future.

What were your reasons for deciding to study a Masters degree?

I decided to pursue an MArch because obtaining a Masters degree was crucial for my professional development. In particular, the MArch in Advanced Architectural Design at the University of Strathclyde was an excellent choice as it provides the RIBA Part II accreditation, which is essential for advancing my career in architecture.

What made you want to pursue your master’s studies outside of your home country?

When I completed my undergraduate degree, I felt a strong desire to explore different cultures and countries. I believe that studying in a different country between a Bachelors and Masters degree can significantly broaden your horizons and enhance your problem-solving skills. Experiencing diverse cultural influences during your studies is essential, as it enables you to approach problems from multiple perspectives and enriches your cultural background.

Why did you choose to study at Strathclyde?

I was already familiar with the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow, as my brother graduated from Strathclyde Business School with his Masters degree in 2019. The University’s welcoming atmosphere and high-quality courses made it an appealing choice for me. In 2020, I felt that choosing a supportive and friendly environment was the right decision for my studies.

What facilities have you had access to during your studies?

Strathclyde Sport is a state-of-the-art gym that provides all Strathclyde students with access to top-class facilities at an affordable price. The Student Union is a great place to relax and take a break from studying, offering a welcoming space to socialise. Additionally, The Union and its societies regularly organise engaging social events and support sessions, which are especially valuable for students adjusting to a new environment away from home.

Are you part of any groups or societies?

Yes, I am one of the founding members of The PGR Podcast Society. Our goal is to create an information channel that makes research and innovation more accessible to both students and the wider public. We primarily focus on engineering topics but remain open to expanding into other fields.

What are the highlights about studying in your Department?

Our Department of Architecture is dedicated to helping students reach their full potential by providing valuable opportunities and fostering an environment that encourages growth and achievement. The Department actively supports students in pursuing their academic and professional goals, offering guidance, resources, and challenges that push them to excel. With a team of highly knowledgeable and approachable experts in their respective fields, the department ensures that students receive high-quality education and mentorship. Their commitment to both academic excellence and personal development creates a supportive and inspiring learning experience.

What made you decide to continue your studies at Strathclyde with PhD study?

My supervisors were the main reason I chose to continue my studies at Strathclyde. Dr Ombretta Romice, who supervised my MArch thesis dissertation, introduced me to the PhD programme and encouraged me to explore the opportunity further. My research proposal is closely aligned with the focus of the Urban Studies and Analytics research unit, making Strathclyde the ideal place to pursue my PhD. Additionally, the software I am using for my research, combined with the extensive expertise of my supervisors in this field, made my supervisory team, comprising Professor Sergio Porta and Dr Ombretta Romice, the perfect fit to guide and support my academic journey.

What have you enjoyed most about studying at Strathclyde?

Before coming to Strathclyde, I was used to a more theoretical approach to learning, so the practical focus at the University of Strathclyde pushed me to develop new skills across different areas. This hands-on approach challenged me to think critically, apply my knowledge in real-world scenarios, and adapt to new methodologies, ultimately making me a more well-rounded professional. The combination of this academic challenge, the University’s cutting-edge facilities, and the welcoming, supportive environment has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my experience at Strathclyde. These factors have not only enhanced my education but also helped me grow personally and professionally.

What are your ambitions for the future, and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

During my PhD, I developed a deep passion for education and sharing knowledge with others. Strathclyde has nurtured this interest by allowing me to pursue the PgCert in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education, which has been instrumental in shaping my teaching approach. Additionally, my supervisors provided me with the opportunity to teach in the master’s programme, helping me develop and refine my teaching skills through hands-on experience.

Beyond teaching, research has been another fascinating aspect of my academic journey. My supervisors have expertly guided me in reaching my full potential, offering invaluable support throughout my PhD.

As part of my research, I learned coding to analyse data, and I found it incredibly rewarding when, after the hard work, I achieved the expected results to prove my theory.

Looking ahead, my supervisors have been exceptionally supportive, guiding me through the process of applying for research grants and offering opportunities to teach and develop course materials. Their mentorship has played a crucial role in preparing me for a well-rounded academic career that balances both research and teaching, equipping me with the skills and experience necessary for future success.

Would you recommend Strathclyde to other people and why?

Yes, I would highly recommend Strathclyde to others because it has been an incredibly enriching experience. The University is deeply committed to the professional development of its students, providing valuable support and resources to help them succeed. For example, the Careers Service is an excellent resource for guidance on career planning, job applications, and life after graduation. Strathclyde’s practical approach to education, combined with its supportive environment and strong industry connections, makes it an outstanding choice for anyone looking to advance their academic and professional journey.

Any other comments you would like to add?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Strathclyde has been the incredible support from both my peers and Faculty members. The collaborative atmosphere within my Department has not only helped me grow academically but also provided me with friendships and professional connections that I will carry forward. I truly appreciate the opportunities I’ve had here, and I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I’ve gained in my future career.
